I’ve just submitted my entry to the Ultimate Bra Maker’s Challenge for January. The Challenge is a year long event with monthly themes and prizes. This month was to make an undergarment using Pantone’s Color of the Year–Ultra-Violet. I made my first pair of panties with the help of Sewing Panties: Construction and Fit by Beverly Johnson on Craftsy. I made the panty and then I dyed it with Rit dyes and their recipe for ultra-violet. I’m pretty happy with the result. The color is lovely and it works with my personal style color palette.
Constructing the panty was really easy and Beverly Johnson is a great instructor. She teaches in Hamilton, Ontario which is about 40 minutes from where I live in New York, and once I renew my Passport I plan on taking her classes in person. They fit you and make sure that your bra/panty/corset/swimsuit is the right size so you don’t have to try and tweak the fit yourself. A big plus in my book. But, until I get around to renewing I’m fitting myself and doing a so-so job of it. With that, I have a few fit issues with the panty. The biggest is that I made a brief style that sits right at my waste. Not my favorite, but I decided to do it this way to have a basic brief panty. Easy enough to lower the waist. I also plan on altering/playing with the leg openings.
I’m really excited to expand my panty making skills. I love pretty underwear and I often can’t find the size I need in the style/color I want in ready-to-wear. Making my own panties and matching bras (yes, bras are in my “to-be-made” queue) is something I’ve always wanted to do. So, here’s to my first step in that direction.
Happy Sewing, Geniene
